If you are new to Google Workspace for Education, you might be wondering how it works and what it means for your child’s learning. Google Workspace is a suite of digital tools designed specifically for schools to help students create, learn, and collaborate safely.

Here is a quick guide to the core tools your child will be using:

A Safe and Secure Learning Environment

Student safety and privacy are our top priorities. Google Workspace for Education provides a walled-garden environment for our school.

  • No Advertising: Google does not sell student data, and there are absolutely no advertisements in the core educational tools.

  • Privacy by Design: Student accounts are managed by the school. Files and emails are private and securely stored, and the school controls who can communicate with students.

  • Monitored Access: We ensure that students are using these tools safely and appropriately in line with our school’s digital citizenship guidelines.

Google Classroom (The Digital Hub)

Think of Google Classroom as your child’s digital desk and diary. This is where teachers post assignments, share learning resources, and send announcements. Students use Classroom to see what work is due, ask their teacher questions, and submit their finished assignments.

Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets (Creating and Presenting)

These are the tools students use to actually do their work:

  • Google Docs: A word processor for writing stories, essays, and reports.

  • Google Slides: A presentation tool for creating visual slideshows and projects.

  • Google Sheets: A spreadsheet tool for math, graphing, and organizing data.

    Because these tools are cloud-based, students can access their work from any device, whether they are at school or at home, just by logging in.

Real-Time Collaboration

One of the biggest benefits of Google Workspace is collaboration. Students can work on the same document or presentation at the exact same time, whether they are sitting next to each other or working from home.

  • Peer Learning: Students can safely brainstorm, edit, and build projects together in real-time.

  • Teacher Feedback: Teachers can pop into a student’s document while they are working on it to leave helpful comments, highlight areas for improvement, and offer immediate guidance.

Google Drive (The Digital Backpack)

Google Drive is where all of your child’s work is safely saved. Every time a student types a word in a Doc or adds a picture to a Slide, it saves automatically to their Drive. No more lost USB sticks or forgotten homework!
